I've only ever been to Blackpool twice - in 1978 and about 1982, I think.
I found it to be a filthy, detestable place, except for the trams - they were great fun.
My best wishes to all those involved with this venture, and, perhaps, I might visit again one day, but only for the trams!

The best thing that could happen to the redundant BLACKPOOL trams. I have many memories off them as i have vixited Blackpool almost every year since 1944. As i do not live in England now it will be a pleasure to visit the museum when i do come over.

Surely the Tramway Museum is not about whether trams are attractive to look at or not. The Centenary class are important historically for the reasons the article states. Regardless of their reliability, they have been used an awful lot over the past 20 plus years, and it just seem perverse to me to ignore them. Hopefully some other group will not be so short-sighted, and will succeed in preserving one.

Despite all the problems, once the line is up & running, it will be a success and a good advert for the city. I'm not aware of any that has regretted introducing trams - look at Manchester & Nottingham both being extended, and in France & the USA where many new systems have been introduced in recent years.

As for safety, well where the line is to run, it isn't very likely that kids chasing balls are going to be running across the tracks and I've yet to hear of such an incident on any of the UK's other tramways. . Trams do have brakes but if someone dashes in front of one at the last minute then yes they will probably be hit. And they would be if it was a bus too.

Meanwhile, the A9 claims another victim. I think its too late to back out now, as it will be just as much f a waste of money than starting the scheme in the firstplace. Upgrading the killer roads in the Country seems like a much better spend. Save lives, or ease congestion ?
Other good uses could have been improving the road infrastructure, better subsidiaries for public transport, a possible underground system? I also dont understand how they can be safe, a tram wont brake for a child chasing a ball over the road.

What Edinburgh City Council are trying to avoid mentioning is the huge disruption that is now being caused by the tram works which will simply get worse with the introduction of the system. Congestion will be impossible and pollution will be worse for some 139,000 households according to the Council's own figures.

I agree with Geoff that a twin set would be a more suitable candidate for preservation than a centenary car, the centenary cars were not the best looking vehicles when new, and the modofications have made them very little more than boxes on wheels. However I would have though that a twin set is rather large for the confined spaces of most museums with tramways, and Beamish with its extensive circular system would be a more suitable location for one of them
